Beechwood Primary School

Sports Blog – 3 February 2017

It has been a busy couple of weeks on the sports field with a range of sports being played. For the first time we have seen the start of an all girls Tag Rugby League, a Beechwood initiative. For a brief summary of all events played recently, see below.

Monday 16th January – Boccia + New Age Curling. Good success in Boccia coming in 1st place, meaning we go to the level 3 competition at Bradfield College in March. We finished 2nd in NAC, so across the board we did extremely well in an enjoyable tournament. Special mention needs to be paid the five children taking part Mark Smith, Xander Wallis, Grace Casey, Tia Price & Jose Rose. Well done!

Tuesday 17th January – Girls Development Tag Rugby League (round 1 and 2). We performed well in the first round coming second in the table behind Holy Trinity (on points difference), however came unstuck this Tuesday: winning 2, losing 2 and drawing 1, allowing Coombes and Holy Trinity to gain first and second place.

Wednesday 18th January – St Joseph’s V Beechwood (Hockey) – Won 5-1. An excellent effort from all the squad with goals from Kielen Sampson (2), Bethany Rooke (1) and Josh Long (2). We played a really smart and confident game, allowing little time for St Joes to reshape and attack. There was strong defence from Ronak Punia and Tushar Kakar as well as excellent breaks from Kielen and Bethany. We are turning into a very good squad for the future.

Thursday 19th January – Forest Walk, The Chilterns. Second walk done wither side of Christmas and it was a more intense and vigorous walk attending by 17 pupils. Covering distance of around seven miles over difficult terrain the children did extremely well to cover this in 3 ½ hours. More walks to come in Summer Term.

Tuesday 24th January – Beechwood B team Rugby Tournament – Beechwood won the Championship with 4 wins (22 points) and the best try difference (+11). Closely behind were Rivermead with 20 pts after winning three matches and drawing 1. Bonus points proved crucial as both top two teams breached that 4 try limit six times earning 6 bonus points each.

Thursday 26th January – TVRL Race 3 @ Braywick Sports Ground, Maidenhead. Coming into the race we were positioned 8th in division one and needed a healthy score to remain above the Coombes and Burford. The race itself saw approximately 1100 competitors take part over four races (the biggest race by far that I have seen). This is a sign that competition is getting more popular amongst state and private schools. The 3/4 girls did the best on the day with Anya Lees finishing 16th and Lilly Hall finishing well in the top 50 in a group of over 200. The 5/6 boys also faired well against good opposition (Polehampton, St Pauls) with Alex Calutas finishing in the top 50 and Spencer Pengraeve had a storming run finishing 10th out of approximately 250 competitors. We are now in 6th place going into the penultimate race at Lightwater with a strong chance of remaining in Division 1 next year.

Friday 27th January – Beechwood v Dolphin (3/4 Rugby + Netball). A great afternoon saw us winning every game in rugby, but losing in Netball to a well drilled side. There were good performances from Josh Davie-Cuthbert, Sebastian McNeill, Ethan Hine and one try from young gun Josh Rose (year 2).

Wednesday 1st February –  Beechwood v St Josephs – Hockey: Lost 3-5. Fielding a different team than two weeks ago with a few year 4’s playing the contest was evenly matched against a mainly year 5 team. St. Joe’s scored early on, then Beechwood and again led to a 2-2 stalemate at half time. Two early goals against us led to a 2-4 deficit and a final goal with 5 minutes to go sealed the loss with a consolation goal coming from Liam Stiff being scored with two minutes to go. Excellent games from Liam, Bethany Rooke, Ronak Punia and improving games from Sian and Lauren Watkins and Spencer Pengreave.
