Beechwood Primary School

What a busy couple of weeks it has been in Foundation!

School has begun for our new intake of children and the whole Foundation team has been really impressed with how quickly the children have settled into Beechwood routines. The children have all had lots of opportunities to play in both of the classrooms and have made full use of the outdoor area. Adults have made good observations about the fantastic games that the children have been playing and we already have a bank of photos showing what they have been doing.

The home corner, the trains and the Lego have all been really popular activities but lots of children have also come up with some really imaginative games in the sandpit and with the outdoor building blocks. Miss Anderson’s classroom has been turned into a secret den and Miss East’s ‘investigation table’ has housed some interesting creepy crawlies…! Generally behaviour during activities has been excellent and all the adults (and dragons!) have been very pleased with the children.

This week we began our daily RWI phonics lessons and we have begun learning the most common single letter sounds. Most children have picked these up quickly and they have enjoyed the fast pace and interactivity of the 15 minute sessions. Following their learning of the sound, the children are given time to practise writing the sound using a selection of resources  – finger writing in sand, chalk on black paper, colouring pencils, crayons as well as the more traditional pencil and paper. Please feel free to use any of these ideas at home as well!

See you next week,

Miss Anderson and Miss East
